In the mother’s womb the baby is fed through the cord connecting the mother and baby. The baby is introduced to outside food as soon as it comes out into the world. Its first food is its mother’s breast milk.
Breast milk has all the nutrients and antibodies required for the baby’s good health. The antibody in the breast milk keeps the baby away from all dangerous diseases. Any mother not wanting to feed or not fit to feed will opt for the formula food.
As per the studies conducted in American Academy of Paediatrics on baby food, breast milk is the best food until the baby turns 6 months. After this age, outside food is given to the baby in the form of very thin liquid. The food should be very thin since the baby do not have teeth at this age and cannot chew the food. As the child grows, the food is thickened slowly.
After the baby crosses his first birthday, he is given the cow’s milk. Before one year, the infant will not have the capacity to digest the protein present in the cow’s milk. It does not contain all the nutrients that the under one year old child should get. The minerals present in the cow’s milk may damage the infant’s kidney.
When you start on solid food, make a note of food items that should be avoided like nuts, honey, soft foods, etc. Many a times the baby is allergic to some food items that we generally do not know. When you try any new item on the baby, make sure that you give them in a very small quantity and wait for atleast 10-15 days to see any reactions. This way you can avoid the food items, which are of unbeneficial to your baby.
On your paediatrician’s advice, you can start cereals for the kid at the doctor recommended age. Care has to be taken to avoid any lump formation in the baby food. Many experts believe in the fact that a daring approach to initiating solids grades a better nutrition to the baby.
